All SMSFs that have not lodged their Annual Return for 2 or more Financial Years will be removed from the Super Fund Lookup until all the overdue returns are brought up to date.
All newly registered SMSFs are encouraged to lodge their first return on time. For SMSFs that fall into this category and who are not operating in their first year, a RNN (Return Not Necessary) will be issued. However, a RNN can only be issue once during the SMSF’s life. If the SMSF has not started to operate in their second year, the Trustees are encouraged to cancel the registration.
For those SMSFs have never lodged their annual returns, the fund details will be removed from the Super Fund Lookup and refer them for compliance action for non-lodgement. Where there is no evidence of the Fund operating, ATO (the regulator) will cancel their registration.
If your SMSF falls into any of these categories, please bring your lodgement up to date or wind-up your Fund.
